Here's something cool for a warm day

http://www.thestar.com/news/world/article/639459

It's a New York Times article about Zamboni
"skating through the recession". Interesting to note how it's written for an American readership, necessitating mention of Lord Stanley, "whose trophy goes to the NHL champion". It's also interesting to note that Zamboni HQ is in a residential neighbourhood of Los Angeles, with a Brantford branch plant.

Hi Bob. You don't know me, so I'll understand if you don't want to reply. A friend of mine would like to get into TV or radio as a producer, writer or some other off-camera job. Was hoping you could give some advice on what kind of skills she should develop to help her get a foot in the door. Feel free to email me if you are inclined to reply. Thanks!!

My frank, honest advice: Don't.
The market is flooded with a lot of people with a lot of experience (including me) at a time when cutbacks and layoffs are the norm (such as my case). Simply put, there are no doors open wide enough to get a foot into.
Sorry for the brutal reply, but I don't believe in encouraging something that will most likely end up in disappointment.

Fair enough. Thanks for taking the time to reply! I'll pass your words along to my friend.

Aw, poor Patti's friend. I think if Patti's friend has a passion for this field he or she will find a way to make a success of it -- even if it means leaving this country and going to the land where TV is GOD or branching out to the web-o-sphere which seems to be killing TV. And, Bob, if I were you, I'd be totally taking this opportunity to do something bold that maybe that you've always wanted to do but never had the chance to do.
