"It's too late to turn back now..."

With apologies to The Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose for the heading...
All of the conditions have been cleared, and in exactly 30 days, I will own my own home!
Now, the fun part: de-cluttering, packing and the actual move. I have an estimator from a moving company coming over Friday morning.
Any packing and/or moving tips? Horror stories? Come on, dish.

YES! PURGE!!!!
SELL as much crap as you need before you move. I've moved like 7 times in 8 years. I know how to move. Streamline your crap!
Craigslist is great for selling your stuff or even giving it away!!

If you get ownership of the house before your move date - bring some stuff there yourself a few days in advance to save on moving costs.

Have bottled water for your movers. :)

Thanks for the tips, N@. Much appreciated.
I have moved four times in eight years -- this will be my fifth. I'm getting better at it, too.

Ask the movers for wardrobe boxes... they usually include them for free. That way you do not need to take the clothes off hangers. Wardrobe boxes are sturdy and come equipped with a bar that you can usually just take the hangers from your closet and load directly to the wardrobe box without removing the hangers. EASY!!

And as N@ said get rid of alot of crap!!

I still have the two wardrobe boxes that I used in my Oct. 2000 move from Timmins to Pickering. I figured I might be moving a few more times in the years to come, so there's no way I was getting rid of them. You can load a lot of junk in the bottom of them, too, once the clothes are hung.

Don't scrimp on economy movers. Get the professionals. It saves a lot of headaches down the line. Also what everyone else said - purge, purge, purge. Start your packing NOW. Put away all the stuff you don't use on a daily basis. Have a safe empty room with a door that closes for the cat on moving day.

You still moving on Halloween? If so the only thing I'd highly recommend... BUY SOME CANDY NOW. you don't want your first day in your new neighbourhood, to be labelled the crusty old fart who doesn't give out candy on Halloween... Trust me, the kids don't care that you're now up to hock in debt and exhausted from the move, they just want their treats damn it and they don't mind showing their dissatisfaction if you don't have something... and something good. We're talking chocolate bars here people....

oh yea, and purge. When I was preparing for my move back in Dec 2006 I was packin and purgin for a solid month I ditched over 40 bags of garbage, donated 5 bags of clothing etc to the good will and STILL once I unpacked AFTER the move there was more purging to be done...

It's also a good opportunity to chuck a lot of the lame ass things you've been given over the years.. the ugly porcelain rooster, the black velvet painting of Ginette Reno, the 'gold' plastic moose combo thermometer and calendar with BANFF written on it... and then when asked later where they are you can blame it on the movers... ;-) (and to anyone who gave that crap to Bob, SHAME ON YOU!)
